As the oldest and only locally-governed non-profit senior housing community in Kalamazoo, Heritage Community of Kalamazoo (HCK) has a long history of philanthropy and community engagement. In recent years, their fundraising program had been housed in a dormant supporting foundation. Executive and volunteer leadership were eager to reinvigorate philanthropy on the campus and engaged us to guide them to a more successful, sustainable philanthropy program.
They take on a mentoring role versus only a consulting role. Their culture and work ethic is uncanny.
Together with R+R, HCK reignited the Foundation, developed a three-year fund development plan, and hired a staff leader for the fundraising program. After several amazing accomplishments in their fundraising practices and performance, HCK is now preparing to embark on a campaign including programmatic and capital enhancements.
As we continue our partnership to help HCK launch their campaign, we recently conducted a board engagement survey and board education sessions. These highlighted ways in which the organization’s campaign aspirations can align with industry best practices. We are now convening a task force to guide an assessment of the organization’s campaign readiness.
As a result of revamping several important policies and procedures, HCK improved fundraising results both in terms of participation and total dollars raised, and successfully garnered major gifts. Our strategic partnership has allowed HCK to focus on developing new programs and initiatives, provide scholarships to their nursing staff, and expand their capacity to better serve residents and their families now and in the future.
