Helen Starman, a Senior Consultant at Richner & Richner, has over twenty-five years of fundraising and non-profit experience as a fundraising consultant, development professional, social worker, community volunteer, and board member. Prior to Richner & Richner, Helen served as the Director of Development for IHN @ Alpha House, a shelter for parents and children experiencing homelessness.
Trained as a clinical social worker, Helen worked with parents and children in Detroit, Jackson, and Ann Arbor. Volunteer leadership on several nonprofit Boards of Directors including the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation, Lamaze Family Center, Community Daycare and Preschool, and several PTOs sparked her interest in fundraising as a profession. At IHN @ Alpha House she created and managed an annual fundraising program that included major gifts, multi-year pledge programs, planned giving, annual events, and consistent stewardship and communication plans for both donors and volunteers.
Helen is actively involved with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Detroit as a member of the Program Committee and chair of the AFP Ann Arbor Network. She also serves as a Lead Reviewer for the Giving USA 2017 Editorial Board. Helen is a member of the Planned Giving Roundtable of Southeast Michigan. She has presented workshops, trainings, and webinars on fundraising and board governance for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, LeadingAge MI, LeadingAge IL, the Great Lakes Animal Welfare Conference, the University of Michigan, and many local nonprofit boards of directors.
